About the data

Most figures come from public government datasets on the India Data Portal (indiadataportal.com), run by the Bharti Institute of Public Policy at ISB. Rain and temperature come from the India Meteorological Department, and what each crop needs to grow from the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

What this tool can't tell you

  • The soil of one specific field. Get your own soil tested.
  • Your soil type (black, red, alluvial and so on). We only have soil test results.
  • This season's weather. Rain and temperature are averages for 2001–2024, for an area about the size of a district.
  • The price you'll get. Mandi prices are wholesale; after transport and commission you get less.
  • Which variety to grow. Crop needs are typical for the crop; some varieties take more heat or less water.
  • Current fertiliser use (the survey data is from 2011 and 2016).
  • A guarantee of what will succeed. This tool shows evidence, not promises.
